October Full Moon Splash - 2026

What ocean nomads are up to

Hello Wild Ones!

This splash is a few days after Full Moon. A beautiful weather window opened up for some hiking & wild camping, so I took it. Practising what we preach at Ocean Nomads πŸ™ƒ And as many of you know, weather windows are precious!

Superpowered to make more beautiful connections between ocean people, projects, and nature. How fast the world is changing right now with tech and AI. It only becomes more clear how important is true and trusted connection with each other and with nature. A personalized intro, insight, shared experience, or simply someone who has your back, can never be chat-gptd. It makes me proud and hopeful of Ocean Nomad now, and in the future.

Welcome to this newssplash. πŸ’™ Around every full moon month, we share a few snippest, stories and updates from the ocean nomads network. So you can dip your toes, and as a little reminder to get out there and make those dreams real! Whether you sail, live in a van, hike long trails or run a basecamp by the sea, you'll find your kind of wild hearted people here.

Big adventure coming up!

Are we really kitesurfing across the Atlantic?

Yes! Koen is preparing a solo crossing of the Atlantic by kite: about 3,000 nautical miles from the Canary Islands through Cape Verde towards the Caribbean. No engine, just wind and willpower. But nobody crosses an ocean like that alone. He needed a support vessel, a skipper and a crew.

That's where the Ocean Nomads network came in. When Koen reached out, we connected him with Thomas and his boat Windfall. The crew sailing alongside? Most of them found each other right here, on our trips and at our meetups. After the crossing, Thomas heads north to spend a winter in the Arctic ice.

And a huge congrats to Thomas! After three years of hard work, Windfall has finally left the dock. WILD, and we're so proud of you 🫢 (and of every ocean nomad who lent a hand along the way). Many of you sailed with Thomas on one of our trips, and some went on to skipper or even own a boat. Thank you for years of showing up for Ocean Nomads members and inviting them into the adventure πŸ’™

Want to be part of something like this one day? It usually starts with a hi in the network, where you can connect with Koen, Thomas, the whole crew and the wider Ocean Nomads crowd. Many of us drop in at the new moon online meetup too. Meet them in Belgium between 1 and 3 November before they set off, or cheer them on in Cape Verde on 30 December.

Opportunities in the network right now

  • Crew wanted, Atlantic Sailing! β›΅ Thomas leaves Belgium for leg 1 of a journey around the world, sailing south to Lanzarote before the kite crossing. He's posted a last-minute crew call. Ready to go? (see the crew call) Really great and wild learning opportunity!
  • Crew welcome in the Canary Islands 🌴 Keith welcomes crew on his boat in the Canaries, the best place to be on a boat when you're looking for an Atlantic crossing!
  • Citizen science in the Canaries πŸ”¬ A science crew needs a reliable, hands-on volunteer to help collect ocean data at sea. (connect)
  • A bunk for 2 to 3 weeks in early 2027? πŸŽ’ RaphaΓ«l wants to spend a few weeks on a boat early next year, taking it slower and building his skills. He's investing in himself and getting ready with the guides in our network. Got room on board, or a slow passage coming up? Say hi to him.
  • 5 grants for your ocean adventure πŸ“Έ Photography, research, young sailors and expeditions. The first deadline is 15 November. (explore them)

Inside the network you'll find many more crew calls, projects and people exchanging and supporting each other.

Atlantic Crew Report

What 131 Atlantic crew told us

Since 2015 we've asked sailors who crossed the Atlantic as crew what it was really like. 131 of them from 25+ countries answered. 51% had no real sailing experience before they went, 53% paid nothing for their berth, and 75% would do it again.

The full report covers how they found their boat, what it cost, what they wished they'd known and their top tips. You'll find it in the members' resource library, next to the Atlantic routes, costs, weather and the safety checklist.

A glimpse inside

Arrive somewhere new and already know someone

Almost 290 ocean nomads from more than 35 countries are in the network. A spare bunk in Maine. A warm shower in Galicia. A cup of tea in the Virgin Islands. This is what members offer each other, straight from their profiles:

  • 🀝 39 members offer a helping hand
  • β˜• 38 members a cup of tea
  • πŸ› 29 members a place to sleep, and 24 a warm shower 🚿
  • 🍲 26 members would invite you for a shared meal
  • πŸ„ 27 members would join you for a hike, a surf or a snorkel
  • 🚐 13 members have a place to park your van
  • β›΅ 40 members are ready to jump aboard at short notice
  • 🌳 And one offers a whole 50-acre campus

Every one of them is someone you can get to know before you arrive.

The map keeps filling up with people, boats, projects and little treasures, from a coconut farm in Dominica to an organic veggie farm in Sint Maarten. Members are moving too, so pin yourself and see who's around.

Jonathan is walking across America πŸ” Some members are moving on foot. Jonathan, who co-hosts our online meetups, is hiking the Continental Divide Trail, and tunes in from a mountain top whenever he finds a stripe of signal. His latest video is in Explore More, further down πŸ‘‡

And a proud shout-out to Paula! She joined our sailing camp in Galicia in 2021 as a total newbie, sailing from Spain to Portugal. A few years on, she's just skippered her first boat, with 9 people on board πŸŽ‰ What's your ocean milestone this year, big or small? (share it)
